Sydney Jones was born in 1884 in Stoke on Trent. In 1911 the family were living at 5 Lancaster Road, Newcastle, although they later moved to “Lynton”, Longton Road, Trentham.
Sydney was Chief Insurance Inspector for the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation in Hanley. He played golf and football and was a freemason and past master of Gordon Lodge and member of the Staffordshire Knot Chapter. He was not married.
He enlisted on 27 August 1914 and joined the North Staffordshire Regiment 1st/5th Battalion, regimental number 2688. He rose to the rank of sergeant, but was recommended for a commission prior to his death.
He was killed in action on 13 October 1915 in Flanders, aged 32. He is listed on the Loos memorial Panel 103-105 Pas de Calais, France.
