Joseph Howard Bassett

 

Born on 6 January 1897, Joseph Bassett was the youngest of seven children and lived with his mother and father at Strongford Farm. He was a farm labourer. 

 

He was single but engaged to be married when he joined the Motor Branch of 11th battery of the Machine Gun Corps as a gunner. 

 

His service number was 2172.  Aged 20, he died on 6 February 1917 of kidney failure, possibly as a result of being gassed, at Belton Park Military Hospital, Grantham. 

He is buried at St Luke’s Churchyard, Tittensor.
