John Pearson Howson


John Howson was born in 1893 in Hanley. In 1911 he was living at West View, Queens Road, Penkhull with his father, Edward Drakeford Howson 47, a commission agent, and his mother Mary Howson 47, his uncle John Pearson Howson 55 and his brother Reginald 12. He worked as a draper’s apprentice at Bratt & Dykes, Hanley.


He enlisted in May 1915 and joined the Machine Gun Corps - Motor Machine Gun Service of the Royal Artillery as a gunner.  His regimental number was 1271.


He was invalided home on 8 April 1916 and honourably discharged on 4/4/1917 on the grounds of wounds or sickness and no longer fit for military service. He received the Silver War Badge No.167803, which was awarded to honourably discharged soldiers.


He survived the war and married Marjorie Joan Leighton in 1927. We worked as a commercial traveller in provisions and died of tuberculosis of the lungs at his home at Woodland View, Hanchurch on 3 April 1942 aged 48.
