Harold Smith

 

Harold Mawdsley Smith was born in 1892 in Wolstanton. In 1911 he was living in Brough Lane with his widowed mother Emma and two sisters.  He was a clerk and “motor driver learner”. In 1916 he married Millicent Pennington and was living in Park Drive on the Trentham Estate. There were no children.

 

He was called up in September 1916 and joined the Army Service Corps, Mechanical Transport, reg no DM2/209648 . He took further driver training and was sent to East Africa. His rank was private, but he was promoted to Quarter Master Sergeant without pay.

 

He died on 13 December 1918 at 3rd General Hospital, Beach, Durban, South Africa of pneumonia and influenza, aged 26.  He is buried at Durban (Stellawood) Cemetery.
