Alan Hughes was born in 1895 in Fenton. His father Frederick Hughes was a pottery manufacturer and ran the Opal China Works in Fenton. Alan was an invoice clerk at a china factory and in 1911 the family lived at Hazelhurst in Fenton. He was not married.
He joined the 8th Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment and rose to the rank of second lieutenant, regimental number 2760. He was killed in action on 18 November 1916, aged 22. He is buried at Grandcourt Rd Cemetery, Grandcourt France.
